A radar can turn out to be an extremely important piece of equipment on any ship, as it allows the crew to be informed beforehand regarding any incoming obstacles. And this is exactly the type of product we'll talk about as follows, namely the LRA-2400 High Definition Radome Radar from Lowrance electronics, a device which offers users some fairly wide features at a more or less acceptable price tag.
As the name says it, the LRA-2400 has been equipped with a radome module measuring 24 inches (around 60 centimeters) and weighing around 10 kilos, which means that finding a suitable location for it around the boat might prove to be somewhat of a challenge.
It's also worth mentioning the fact that the the antenna has a horizontal beam width of around 4 degrees, a vertical beam width of around 25 degrees, a 4 kW power output, while the distance range is of 36 nautical miles (around 67 kilometers). All in all, it's a product that will occupy some space around the deck, but, at the same time, it will provide quite an impressive functioning range.
The device is capable of providing very reliable information in just about any type of weather, as it offers certain features designed especially for this purpose. For example, it supports Interference Rejection (up to 3 levels), FTC (Rain Clutter Rejection – on/off only), Smart STC (Sea Clutter Rejection), as well as Gain Adjustment (up to 256 levels), Automatic Tuning, and 7 levels of Trail Settings, all of which contribute to a very high level of accuracy.
Although it's a bit less expensive than some other similar devices from Lowrance, the LRA-2400 High Definition Radome Radar is still a pretty pricey piece of equipment, since it's available at several retailers at an estimated retail price of around 1,700 – 1,900 US dollars. Nevertheless, the sum is worth it, given the fact that, after all, this device could turn out to be a life saver on the sea. |
