The people who are really into photography know only very well that there are quite a lot of situations when a very stable position is required for the camera, but that cannot be attained by using the normal tripod. And that's exactly the reason behind the development of the Gorillapod, a tripod with mobile legs, which can be contorted and wrapped around almost any type of support.
The “feet” of the Gorrillapod have been manufactured by using a system of ball and socket type joints that bend and rotate 360 degrees. That's the reason why it can be practically wrapped around any kind of object (as for example telephone poles, trees, rails or even rocks), forming a stable anchor for compact cameras.
The GorillaPod doesn't come in just one versions, but in several different models, each designed especially to cater for a certain specific range of devices. Thus, there's the Joby Gorillapod Original, which is capable of supporting compact digital cameras weighing up to 275 grams, and it's slightly stronger brother, the Gorillapod SLR, which has been designed for lightweight SLR cameras and video cameras.
Next in line are the Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom, which supports professional tripod heads and SLR cameras with zoom lenses that amount to a total weight of around 3 kilograms, and, last but not least, the Joby Gorillapod Go-Go, a portable, bendable, versatile support system for mobile devices -
from mobile phones to MP3 and video players.
Quite obviously, each of the devices from this particular series has a different price tag, ranging from around 25 US dollars for the original version and up to 55 US dollars for the SLR-Zoom model.
