Data can be transferred and stored through a number of devices and standards. Among those devices that stood tall in face of the technology advancement is the optical drive. CDs have been around for quite some time now and over the past few years the same place occupied by the CD has been taken by DVDs and later-on Blu-ray discs. The Blu-ray technology greatly improved the technical setbacks of the earlier formats, offering users the possibility of recording up to 50GB of digital data on a single disc.
The first company to introduce a Blu-ray disc and a Blu-ray recording and reading device was Sony, which was the major backer of this new technology. LaCie is just one other company which can offer a Blu-ray drive. The company is mostly known for their storage products, which takes full advantage of the design features. The LaCie d2 Blu-Ray Drive is practically a combo optical drive offering support for Blu-ray discs as well as DVDs and CDs.
As many other products from the Lacie product line, this one to has been designed by the famous designer, Neil Poulton. Not going anything over the top, this product offers exactly what you expect from it, in a futuristic and simple design. PC users and Mac users alike will be able to benefit from this product, as it is built with a FireWire and USB 2.0 interface. Along with the LaCie d2 Blu-Ray Drive, which goes for as much as $800, you will also receive a number of bundled software applications meant to make your interaction with the device easier.
Blu-ray discs are far from becoming a standard, as the DVDs are know. But in time, most of the high-end computers will feature a Blu-ray combo drive unless a new, better technology comes along the way. The LaCie d2 Blu-Ray Drive is a nice enough product, offering everything you need from a combo optical drive, but its high price tag might scare most of the customers away. |
