Although the future of wireless USB is still quite uncertain, given the large number of competing wireless technologies currently existing on the market, there are quite a few manufacturers out there that are betting on its success and, consequently, are launching wireless USB devices, meant to overcome the issue of those pesky wires that always seem to clutter the rear side of our desk. And that's also the case with Cables Unlimited, who launched back in November 2008 the Wireless USB Kit with Transmitter and Receiver with Base, a device that allows users to experience the benefits of wireless USB connectivity in a very fast and easy manner. Practically, this kit includes two Wireless USB dongles, one of which is inserted in an available port on the user's computing system, while the second is connected to the particular device you want to wirelessly hook up to your system. However, you'll have to make sure that you're not too far away from your computer, since this thing has a functioning range of just around 30 feet (10 meters). There's also another shortcoming. According to the manufacturer, the Wireless USB Kit doesn't support devices requiring isochronous support, such as webcams, speakers or microphones, so you can pretty much forget about your dreams of chatting over Skype while still laying in bed. Plus, to make things even more interesting, you'll even be able to turn your USB hub into a wireless one, which seems to be the best solution, especially if we're talking about a device of this type fitted with a large number of ports. The pricing for the adapter set is of around 130 US dollars, which is not exactly a very small sum, especially given the fact that the future of this technology doesn't really seem to be such a good one. |
