The home entertainment centers installed in our living rooms are getting more and more crowded, being populated with all sorts of video-signal generators. However, not all of these products can deliver full HD resolutions, and that's the reason why the people over at Gefen have released back in the second half of 2007 the Home Theater Scaler Plus, an adapter that will make things a lot more interesting for all users out there.
Thus, the scaler allows users to upscale and switch their standard definition or high definition component and HDMI sources to resolutions up to 1080p. The device also delivers a very high level of versatility, since it works with just everything you might think of, from set-top boxes, DVD players to the next generation of gaming consoles including the Xbox 360 and PS3.
The Home Theater Scaler Plus supports one component source with analog audio, one composite or S-video source with analog audio, and two HDMI sources with digital audio. The analog audio from the analog sources is digitized and outputted to the HDMI connection as well as the digital audio outs.
Furthermore, the HDMI inputs also have separate digital audio inputs, so you can use DVI sources and separate digital audio, the Home Theater Scaler Plus being able to embed the digital audio into the HDMI output as well as the digital audio outs.
All of the above are possible due to the fact that the device supports digital HD output up to 1080p, features an integrated DVI/HDCP/HDMI compliant receiver, dual scaling engines, dual 3-D motion video adaptive de-interlacers with smooth low-angle edge, as well as a frame rate conversion engine. Moreover, the Home Theater Scaler Plus supports automatic 3:2 pull-down & 2:2 pull-down detection and recovery, while the proprietary Advanced Color Engine technology gives 3D noise reduction on analog inputs.
As expected, the Gefen Home Theater Scaler Plus comes with a wide array of connectivity options, including here 1 HDMI interface, 3 Component video connectors, 1 Composite video (or 1 S-Video), as well as optical TOSlink and Coax SPDIF digital audio connectors and 2 RCA analog audio connectors. Moreover, also as expected from a Gefen product, the device costs quite a lot, retailing for around 500 US dollars, which is a pretty hefty price, even for an upscaling “god” such as this particular item. |
