PNDs have become quite popular these days, just about everyone and their mother coming out with such a product lately. And that's also the case with the NAV-8800, launched by Taiwanese company Marbella in the first half of 2008, a device that provides a rather standard set of navigation and multimedia features, but also a few surprises on the side.
The main component of the device from Marbella is the SiRF Star III high-sensitivity GPS receiver, which provides 20-channel all-in-view tracking and also support for WAAS. Equally important is the built-in 4-inch TFT LCD display with touchscreen, capable of delivering a 480 x 272 pixels resolutions and 65,000 colors.
The Marbella NAV-8800 is powered by a Samsung S3C2440, 400 MHz CPU, accompanied by 32 MB of ROM memory and 64 MB of SDRAM memory. All of these components are very useful for running the navigation software, the OS, as well as the device's other additional functions and features.
And since we're on the subject, it's also interesting to note the fact that Marbella's NAV-8800 also incorporates a 2-megapixel DSC module, which turns the device into a fully-functional digital camera, with photos being stored onto an SD/MMC card. Additionally, the PND can always double as a PMP, since it supports even MP4 files, no to mention viewing JPEGs or listening to MP3s either via the device's own built-in speakers or the 3.5 mm audio jack.
Furthermore, the NAV-8800's built-in FM transmitter allows users to broadcast their favorite music directly via their vehicle's audio system. It has also been equipped with an A/V jack, and even supports the addition of a DVB-T module, which means that the PND can always become a portable TV set. |
