If you've ever come across Netgear, you probably know that they produce mostly wireless media PCs and in some cases small wireless routers. This doesn't mean that their products are less capable than, let's say, Cisco or Allied Telesyn, but instead of orienting all their production line towards server-grade products they try to keep their position in-between with high-performance routers on one side and wireless networking on the other.
Netgear’s FWG114P router incorporates some of the latest networking concepts regarding the SOHO market. This small wireless router has some interesting features, but probably one of the most valuable is the fact that it comes with built-in print server. Using a standard USB 2.0 port, you can hook up any printer and the router will make it accessible to all the PCs connected in the local network.
Not much can be said about the RF module excepting perhaps that the hi-gain antenna is fully detachable. Average wireless throughput is about 20Mbps and the WAN to LAN throughput is about 56Mpbs. The FWG114P comes with a lot of useful technologies such as : DHCP server, PPPoE, Routing (Static Routes, Dynamic Routing - RIP v1 and RIP v2-) and and a fully capable NAT switcher (one-to-many).
Probably the most useful technology that comes implemented in this router’s hardware is the fact that it has a fully functional firewall module loaded with features. The firewall comes with an active SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) module. Upon that you will find a service capable of detecting unauthorized intrusion and the Denial of Service attacks.
Overall this router can offer a pretty good protection for a small network while at the same time providing life saving services such as NAT and PPPoE. As far as pricing is concerned, you can buy the FWG11P for as low as $150 making it a "best-bang-for-the-buck" deal. |
