One of the particular categories of portable computing solutions that has boomed over the course of 2008 is that of netbooks, notebook-like devices that come in an ultra-portable form factor and provide an average level of computing power, which is, nevertheless, quite enough for certain operations, as for example browsing the web or viewing various multimedia files. And that's exactly the type of product we'll talk about as follows, namely the Acer Aspire One, which is among the most important competitors of the iconic Asus EEE PC.
The Aspire One is an extremely portable and lighweight device, measuring just 249 x 170 x 29 mm, at a weight of around 985 grams (like all other netbooks on the market, Acer has kept its product under the 1 kilo limit). Moreover, it's available in five different color versions (Black, Silver, Blue, Brown and, curiously enough, Pink), which means that it addresses a fairly wide range of users.
The hardware configuration is more or less standard, as far as netbooks are concerned. Thus, Acer has chosen an “all-Intel” solution, starting from the CPU (Intel Atom N270, 1.6 GHz) and continuing with the chipset ( Intel 82945GMS + Intel 82801GBM). Furthermore, the Aspire One includes 512 MB of DDR 2 memory and it relies on an 8 GB SSD for storage.
The netbook allows users to view webpages and various files in relatively OK conditions via the 8.9-inch, Acer CrystalBrite (1024x600), LED backlit screen. Furthermore, it incorporates a keyboard that's 95% of a full size one, as well as a touchpad with scroll zone.
As in the case of pretty much every other netbook out there, the Acer Aspire One offers users a very extensive list of networking and connectivity options, including here a 802.11b/g module (with Acer SignalUp technology), Ethernet connector, 5-in-1 cardreader, SD slot, 3 USB ports, VGA output, headphone/lineout interface. Moreover, the netbook features the Acer CrystalEye webcam unit and a built-in microphone.
The Acer Aspire One netbook sells for around 330 – 370 US dollars, depending on the particular version and vendor, which makes it one of the most competitive devices of this type on the market. |
