Gigabyte is one of the world's best-known manufacturers of various hardware components but, just like Asus, it has also decided to enter the portable computing systems' arena. And one of the company's most interesting products of this type is the M912, a netbook that comes equipped with all the features we've come to expect from such devices, but also with a rather interesting twist as far as the display is concerned.

Thus, unlike most other netbooks, which feature a notebook-like hinged display, Gigabyte's M912 sports a swiveling display, which can rotate at angles of up to 180 degrees. Moreover, the WXGA (1280x768) / WSVGA (1024x600) panel is touch-sensitive, a feature rarely encountered in other similar products.

As mentioned earlier, the other tech specs are rather standard, since the M912 is built around an Intel Atom Processor N270 running at 1.6GHz, accompanied by a Mobile Intel 945GSE Express Chipset+ ICH7M and 1 GB of DDR 2 memory (up to 2 GB are supported). The storage requirements are taken care of by the 9.5mm SATA HDD, which rotates at 5400 RPM and is available in 120/160/250 GB versions.

Connectivity-wise, the Gigabyte M912 is also quite standard, since it has been equipped with 3 USB 2.0 ports, Line-in and Line-out audio interfaces, Ethernet port and a 4-in-1 card reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS Pro) and an ExpressCard. Moreover, the device packs the rather usual wireless connectivity options, in the form of a built-in Bluetooth V2.1+EDR module and a Wireless LAN 802.11b/g adapter.

Other interesting features worth mentioning about the device from Gigabyte are the built-in speakers (1.5 W x 2), the 1.3-megapixels webcam and, finally, the 80 key keyboard with Touch Pad. As far as the operating systems are concerned, the M912 works equally well with the Windows Vista Home Basic and Windows XP Home.

The Gigabyte M912 netbook can be purchased for around 850 US dollars, which is quite a high price point, compared to the other similar products existing on the market, which typically sell for under $450.

last november 2008 i bought an old ibm x41 tablet tho my 1st instinct at the time was to get an msi wind. just like anyone sensibly looking to buy a laptop, i wanted something portable, powerful and would run on a batt for an extended amount of time. atom powered netbooks were on the rise but i believed the 2mb cache of the older pentium M brand would out but after 4 months on the x41 i was rewady to recant and as luck would have it i found a gigabyte m912x for under US$500 at a local online seller :)

i pounced on it and was not surprised to see this netbook tablet fulfill all my expectations and more as it ran programs the x41 wouldnt even try to run (mostly games) though the x41 had the 1.6ghz proc and 2.5gb of ram, it's slow 4200rpm low-capacity (60gb) drive was woefully inadequate.

i just sold my x41 this morning for all of US$500 so i keep peace with my conscience that it's sale went to my new fave toy, the m912x which is now running my ddr2 2gb from transcend previously on the ibm. the fast 7200 rpm (i think the seller changed the drive from factory) drive keeps pace with anything i've put into it. it even ran the opening vid of left 4 dead, tho the gameplay stutters but never crashes. i'm happy running dawn of war dark crusade, call of duty and freedom fighters on it. apps that shine include 3ds max and photoshop cs, plus i use soundforge on it from time to time. the 4-cell batt squeezes out a good 2:30 to 3:15 depending on the brightness and it's easier to charge this netbook off my portable solar charger than the x41.

definite step up! and as reviews would show, the wind would have been a decent contender to the m912 sans the touchscreen but i wanted the use of my finger to do things on the screen :)

recently there's been news of the new gigabyte t1028 (or whatever moniker they wanna call it) and i'm sure i'll find some way to change this 8.9"er to a 10" someday but aside from that there's not much reason to upgrade. the asus netbook tablets seem a good show but they're apparently going the apple way and having a batt you can't change is definitely a no-no on something supposed to run on batts.

i'm sure there's gonna be something thinner or lighter to come sometime soon but so far i'm future-proofed with my handy m912x :)
