Gigabyte is one of the world's best-known manufacturers of various hardware components but, just like Asus, it has also decided to enter the portable computing systems' arena. And one of the company's most interesting products of this type is the M912, a netbook that comes equipped with all the features we've come to expect from such devices, but also with a rather interesting twist as far as the display is concerned.
Thus, unlike most other netbooks, which feature a notebook-like hinged display, Gigabyte's M912 sports a swiveling display, which can rotate at angles of up to 180 degrees. Moreover, the WXGA (1280x768) / WSVGA (1024x600) panel is touch-sensitive, a feature rarely encountered in other similar products.
As mentioned earlier, the other tech specs are rather standard, since the M912 is built around an Intel Atom Processor N270 running at 1.6GHz, accompanied by a Mobile Intel 945GSE Express Chipset+ ICH7M and 1 GB of DDR 2 memory (up to 2 GB are supported). The storage requirements are taken care of by the 9.5mm SATA HDD, which rotates at 5400 RPM and is available in 120/160/250 GB versions.
Connectivity-wise, the Gigabyte M912 is also quite standard, since it has been equipped with 3 USB 2.0 ports, Line-in and Line-out audio interfaces, Ethernet port and a 4-in-1 card reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS Pro) and an ExpressCard. Moreover, the device packs the rather usual wireless connectivity options, in the form of a built-in Bluetooth V2.1+EDR module and a Wireless LAN 802.11b/g adapter.
Other interesting features worth mentioning about the device from Gigabyte are the built-in speakers (1.5 W x 2), the 1.3-megapixels webcam and, finally, the 80 key keyboard with Touch Pad. As far as the operating systems are concerned, the M912 works equally well with the Windows Vista Home Basic and Windows XP Home.
The Gigabyte M912 netbook can be purchased for around 850 US dollars, which is quite a high price point, compared to the other similar products existing on the market, which typically sell for under $450. |
