Video glasses are nothing new, since we've seen several models hit the market during the past few years, but any new addition to this field is quite welcome, since portable video playback is becoming more and more popular with the users. And the device you're about to see, namely the iWear AV230 from Vuzix, promises some pretty interesting features, as fore example the possibility to enjoy you own 44 inches (112 cm) home theater for about 4-5 ours, wherever you might be.
As most devices of this type, the AV230 (actually twin high-resolution 320x240 LCD displays) can be worn as a pair of sunglasses, and includes separate focus adjustments and built-in removable high quality stereo headphones. The device can be worn with or without prescription eyeglasses and the independent focus adjustments (+2 to -5 diopters) allow most users to enjoy the virtual display without their prescription eyewear.
The built-in optics system is also quite an advanced one, since the devices offers a 23-degree field of view, a 3/4-inch eye-relief and a 5/16-inch eyebox, and has an IOD (intraocular distance) of 2 3/8 inches. Additionally, the device has been equipped with a color corrected 10th order aspherical lens with diffractive surface, for enhanced viewing.
The device also sports an in-line rechargeable battery (up to 4-5 hours of functioning life) built into the single cable, and is compatible with a wide variety of video signal sources, from DVD players to gaming consoles and cellular phones with video output.
The Vuzix AV230 video glasses sell for around 220 US dollars, which, overall, is not that bad a price, given the fact that, after all, the market is filled with a lot of similar, yet more expensive products.
