One of the biggest problem faced by digital music is that of the visible loss of quality during compression, a process that makes the files a lot easier to download and more convenient to store, but also takes its toll on the sound fullness and fidelity. However, this particular problem might soon come to an end due to a little device developed by the people over at Creative, namely the Xmod, that supposedly makes your digital music and movies even better than the original, recorded variant.
Thus, the Xmod restores the details and vibrancy to the audio files in quite an intelligent manner, by enhancing the highs and lows, creating a true surround sound and taking the music beyond the studio quality (at least that's what the manufacturers say it does). The numbers listed in the specifications' area seem to confirm this statement, since the earphones that accompany the Xmod have a working frequency range of 140 Hz - 20 Khz, attain a maximum sensitivity level of 112 dB ± 3 dB (I/P Level:1 mW) and have an impedance of 32 ohm ± 15%.
Moreover, it seems that this system works very well even with headphones, since the X-Fi CMSS-3D expands music from the headphones outwards, the effect felt by the user being similar to the one attained while being surrounded by multiple speakers.
Another very interesting feature of the Xmod external sound enhancement solution is the fact that it's always ready to rock'n roll. Thus, the device is 100% plug-and-play (it simply connects to a notebook, PC, Mac or music player) and doesn't require any software or drivers to install. As for the interfaces, it's important to mention that the Xmod features a 3.5mm line out stereo jack, a 3.5mm line-in/mic-in stereo jack, as well as a headphone output.
The Creative Xmod sells for around 30 US dollars, which is indeed a very small price to pay for a device that will most likely add an extra level of quality to one's audio experience.
