Rip Curl is a company famous for its tradition in manufacturing wetsuits, as it entered the business in 1969, but never before have innovation, technology and science been so meticulously challenged, as in the design of the H-Bomb, praised as the first heated wetsuit.
The design of the suit integrates heating elements and batteries, cushioning both with a neoprene sponge for comfort. The purpose of the suit is to warm your core when surfing in cold conditions, so that the heart can pump blood to your extremities as well, so that it keeps you warmer and surfing for longer. This is why the suit's heating elements are placed along the wearer's spine.
Using two coated fiber elements positioned on the back, the H-Bomb supplies heat to the core of the body with two Polymer Lithium Ion 7.4V batteries, each weighing around 120 grams.
The heating elements are “free flying” carbon fiber coils– there’s no metal – so there’s no electromagnetic field generated by any metal component and there’s no metal to corrode when it’s in salt water. Also, the suit is configured in such a way that it allows maximum levels of stretch to the back panel where they are placed.
The battery packs are positioned on the lower back, where body torque is least required. Their positioning will have the least impact on your surfing experience, partly thanks to their lightweight too.
Batteries are rechargeable and it takes approximately 3 hours recharge time to restore full power.
The temperature of the heating elements is controlled using 3 settings on the switch, but there's even more to this wetsuit. Thus, besides the electronics and heating elements, the H-Bomb is also made from a Rip Curl exclusive E3 neoprene, praised by the manufacturers as the lightest, warmest and most flexible neoprene ever.
Furthermore, the H-Bomb features a fireskin lining that will wick the water away and combines with the heaters to keep the wearer warm, as well as internal and external liquid taping on all seams, for the ultimate water tight seal.
The H-Bomb costs around 475$ and can be ordered online from various Rip Curl authorized retailers. |
