Can you believe that there are still many people who enjoy the pristine sound of their favorite music through 50 years-old amplifiers? This is no ad, such people still exist and they have rejoiced the release of the new version of a legendary amp form Quad, the II Forty. Indeed, we're speaking about the same technology that ran 50 years ago and which is producing awesome audio these days as well.
The Quad II Forty comes from the acclaimed Quad II; we have a proud heir of the early days' technology, built with specs and rules that still apply today and which have a lot of fans among discerning audiophiles and sound enthusiasts. Everything has been re-modeled but retaining the old performance-grade; the chassis has been increased so it can now accommodate larger tubes for more power, while the craftsmanship quality is in full respect of the vintage model – even more, the finish of the amp is truly impeccable and sports the same noble, almost royal-exclusive brilliance and kind of perfection only vintage Quad (and similar amps) could ever display.
The new amplifier has been built with carefully hand-wiring and mounting of the components inside the beautiful metal body; while not having changed the topology of the original amp, the Quad II Forty is able to deliver a performance almost identical with any vintage model and also retains the sonic characteristics of the old model.
The tubes have nevertheless been changed with fully-compliant, identical timbre but larger power units, especially to meet the demands of people for whom 15W is too little. Inside the Quad II Forty we now have KT88s instead of KT66s, and a more robust power supply utilizing a 5U4G rectifier valve, while the input tubes are now military specification 6SH7s instead of EF86s. |
