Although the first thing that might come to anyone's mind when hearing (or reading) the word “Dolby” is high-fidelity audio, the truth of the matter is that the researchers over at Dolby Laboratories are actively involved in the development of various display-related technologies. And that's visible from their latest announcement, related to the introduction of the SIM 2 Solar Series display, which features some of Dolby's know how and technology.
The most important contribution brought by the Dolby Laboratories to the SIM2 Solar Series display is the Dolby Vision technology, which features a proprietary algorithm that manages LEDs behind the liquid crystal panel. Each LED is controlled individually in concert with the image on display. By selectively turning off the backlight behind black areas in scenes, Dolby Vision allows those areas to become truly black, but it can also selectively brighten the backlight behind bright areas.
Now, let's take a quick look at the list of features and specs the device from the SIM2 Solar Series has to offer. Hence, according to the companies' joint statement, the Solar Series display is able to handle 16-bit processing for HDR signals, producing 65,536 shades per color. The resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD) and, as mentioned above, the contrast ratio is listed by the manufacturers as “infinite” (namely, over 1000000:1).
The device also provides a maximum brightness level of over 4,000 cd/m2, while the luminance uniformity is of more than 95 percent through the LCD panel. As already mentioned, the backlighting system is made completely of LEDs, namely 2,206 high-power LEDs, to be more precise.
The new SIM2 Solar Series 47-inch display with Dolby Vision technology will be officially unveiled during the upcoming 2009 ISE Show in Amsterdam, with commercial availability being slated for the second quarter of the year (no info on the pricing, though).
