6 Reasons Why You Should Not Buy the Apple iPhone 4

A few reasons not to buy the iPhone 4

After reading about the reasons why one should buy an iPhone, posted here, it's only fair to have a look at some of the reasons why one should not go out and purchase Apple's new handset. Sure, the number differs, but the reasons are equally compelling and important.

Reason 1 – Extreme pricing for the value

Pricing for the iPhone 4 seems to be extremely attractive at a first sight. I mean, just 200 US dollars appears like a pretty sweet deal, but it's something only available for users who “qualify,” namely those who're about to end a contract period and wish for an update or those ready to sign up with AT&T. The others, however, will have to pay a whole lot more than the device is actually worth, namely upwards of 500 US dollars if they're looking for the unlocked device and around 400/500 US dollars if they're considering an upgrade.

Reason 2 – Wait for Windows Phone 7 and Android

As we're pretty sure you're well aware by now, Microsoft has already announced its Windows Phone 7 operating system for smartphones, the first products running this new software platform being scheduled to arrive at some point in the fall of 2010. The fresh OS looks extremely promising so far, and it's very likely that the mobile experience it will be able to deliver will be an impressive one as well.

Plus, as far as Android is concerned, we're witnessing rapid growth and innovation in this field too. Sure, the Google-backed mobile OS has still a long way to go, but in terms of R&D effort, we dare to say it's above the iOS 4. Not to mention there are plenty of Android smartphones out there that can easily outperform the iPhone 4 (the HTC EVO 4G being perhaps the best example).

Reason 3 – iPhone 4 is not really social media-friendly

Let's face it, compared to the Android smartphones, the iPhone 4 and its iOS 4 operating system are far from being social media-friendly. Plus, there's no visible support for various cloud services, which will only become more important in the future.

Reason 4 – FaceTime video calling feature

Yeah, we've listed this one as a reason for buying an iPhone 4, but it can also go the other way around. Let's face it, there are many people out there who don't want the person contacting them to know their whereabouts, at all times. And if you're such a person, you'll certainly not want to purchase this thing either for you or your spouse.

Reason 5 – You simply don't trust Apple and its products

This is somewhat of a personal thing. I mean, there are plenty of people out there who don't agree with the idea of getting an Apple product simply due to the extreme fanboyism surrounding each product coming out from Cupertino. I mean, the “trendy” people go for the Apple products simply because this fits their lifestyles, but there are plenty of “anti-trendy” users out there who don't want to have anything to do with these overpriced devices.

Reason 6 – The choice of network carrier (just for US readers)

The biggest problem the iPhone 4 has, at least in the United States, is the fact that it's only available at AT&T, which is far from being the most reliable carrier out there. I mean, its history of data caps, dropped calls, etc. is notorious, and we doubt that things will change significantly over the next two years (the average timeframe for a contract). However, to be honest, we've seen the 3GS running on other networks (in Europe), and the device behaves absolutely great.

These are just a few reasons why one should not buy Apple's new iPhone 4, but if you've gotten more, please don't hesitate to share them with us via this article's comments section.

I've been reading Softpedia news articles for a more than two years now and this one of the weaker ones I must sadly admit!

I mean you have 10 reasons for buying it, only giving six of which only one is an actual reason not to buy it is weak.

I haven't done much research on the pros and cons of the iPhone as the only real reason to ever buy an iPhone would be to tab in the unlimited number of apps available, everything else about the device seems only to be evolutionary improvements from the previous iPhones compared to a the revolutionary product it is hyped to be. App store is unrivaled and it will take a lot more than just those deep pockets of Microsoft to close in on the App store.

The App store is also an international known application, most of Microsoft's Zune store of what ever it may be called is not available in Europe.

What I have read so far is in terms of "real" draw backs to the Iphone 4 is that there is an issue with the antenna, which is now built around the entire edge of the device, many are complaining of very bad reception or no reception at all! The iPhone is a phone firstly everything else it can do is very nice, and to a certain extent there is much more we expect from a phone now a days, but if it can't make a call or only makes very poor calls than not much point of having it.

On FaceTime, isn't it so that the other person will also need an iPhone to use this function? Also FaceTime is only usable through WiFi, so this means it's nothing more than a tiny built in web cam. Which is handy at times I will admit but for it truly unlock it's potential being able to use it anywhere, anytime is kind of a must.

Another possible down side to the Iphone is where it is being made by Foxconn. As some may be aware the life expectancy at this company is not over 35 (no, Foxconn is not an exclusive Apple producer).

And finally some of the minerals Apple uses in it's products are (/could be) conflict minerals. This was an article featured here on Softpedia.

Come on people for your next post do a little more digging!

I agree totally with the author of this article. From being overpriced (considering other 'smart phones), the 'Android' and 'Google' based phones (which will probably be gaining on the 'I-Phone'), the 'video' function (heck if we wanted to answer a phone and have a video of ourselves on the other person's, it would had been on home phones as 'Disney World' had them in the 70's and who wants to pay the 'data fees' for sending and seeing someone you see almost everyday!). Also the trust now in 'Apples' products since the 'antenna-gate' with the 'bars' showing a better signal vs the real one, the antenna design itself (now you get a 'rubber-band' to make your $300 'I-Phone4' so you can make and receive calls and makes it look like a $30 pre-paid). And finally the 'AT&T' network that can't handle the traffic. I prefer my 'Blackberry' on another network than AT&T that rarely (only had 2 in the last 6months) DROPS a call. 'Apple' needs to recall them or the owners with problems should start a 'Class Action' lawsuit!

i bought a iphone 4 and it sucks I have more dropped calls and warning device must cool down as well as people can not hear me as clear as they could on the 3gs. What a mistake to trade my 3gs for the iphone 4.

read the reasons. well my opinion is this.
i switched to the macbook last year and am extremely glad that I did, no question - its just a better laptop. I am not a geek and thus do not miss geeky software. As for the Iphone, I own a 3GS and a 2G, and I am happy with both. They are easy to use and what these phones do they do brilliantly.I have tried other phones and they need too much fiddling to get started. With the Iphone you switch on, set your mail settings and you are up and running - brilliant !!!! For the average user its just the thing. I am now a fan of Apple - no question. By the way, I am 58 years old... but better late than never!!!

I've owned an iPhone for two years and have been very happy for the most part with it. For me (a satisfied customer), the reasons I would list for not buying it would be:

1: The purchase of the phone and the cost of the service are only one part of the price of using this phone to it's full potential. You will, over the course of your cellphone contract, spend a crapload of money in the App Store. If you don't, you aren't getting everything you can out of the phone (unless you void the warranty by jailbraking it).

2: It's been said before: AT
