Since the first day of the MWC event from Barcelona is in full swing as we speak, more and more manufacturers connected in any possible way to the mobile world start making their announcements, whether we're talking about new handsets, technologies, mobile phones or MIDs. Actually, the issue of MIDs (mobile Internet devices) seems to be a pretty hot one today, since, after the
Intel/LG announcement, NVIDIA revealed the development of a new MID platform, which, apparently, will lead to the appearance of HD-capable devices that will cost as low as 99 US dollars.
While this seems to be a rather far-fetched statement, NVIDIA claims that its all-new platform, based on the NVIDIA Tegra 600 Series computer-on-a-chip, will be able to deliver a very wide range of functions, at the same time requiring a very low amount of power and keeping development costs at a very low point.
Apparently, this new Tegra-based MID will be able to deliver a host of very interesting features, such as 720p and 1080p video playback, a very long battery life, full Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity (the latter via a partnership with ST-Ericsson. The new device will also be able to deliver optimized hardware support for Web 2.0 applications, as well as a complete software solution including Microsoft Windows Embedded CE OS, application viewers, full Internet browser, UI framework, board support package (BSP), software development kit (SDK), Web mail client, and more.
Since, for the time being, there's no info on whether an actual end-product based on this MID platform is in the works, we'll let you read an official statement from NVIDIA, in which Michael Rayfield, general manager of the mobile business unit at NVIDIA, explains the advantages of the Tegra, by saying that “Mobile internet devices have evolved to provide consumers with the performance and connectivity required by today’s lifestyle. Until now, consumers could get just another ‘gadget’ with limited functionality or a PC that’s not ‘always on’. A Tegra-based platform combines the best of both worlds.”
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
