Almost a year ago AMD introduced the Evergreen series of graphics cards, these offerings managing to bring DirectX 11 support along with improved performance, so today everybody is eagerly awaiting the new Souther Island GPUs to make their entrance into the scene, recent leaks shedding some light on what we should expect for these cores, performance wise.
All this info comes thaks to the
Chiphell website, where a users shared what looks very similar with a PR slide that AMD sends to the press prior to a conference call detailing new products.
Although it doesn't seem like much, this contains the specifications for the future Barts Pro and Barts XT GPUs that would power the
future HD 6750 and HD 6770 graphics cards.
Taking a quick look at the table it comes apparent this new family of graphics processors will bring some important improvements to the Evergreen architecture since the shader cluster structure has been modified in order to accommodate only four such clusters (compared to five in the Evergreen cores), although these have become a lot more efficient now.
The new chips will also raise the number of streaming processors available to the
graphics card, the HD 6770 coming in with 1280 SP compared to the 800 SPs available in the present day HD 5770, while also doubling the number of ROP units and the memory bus width.
The core clock speed is also improved, coming now at 900MHz, all these changes making the Barts XT core very likely more powerful then the
HD 5850.
The Barts Pro chip, that will be featured in the HD 6750, will also come with 32 ROP units and a 256bit memory bus , although it will “only” get 1120 stream processors and 56 texturing units, while the operating frequencies will be also dropped down to HD 5850 levels (725 core/1000 memory).
Power efficiency will also be improved in these new chips, although they use the same 40nm manufacturing process, the HD 6750 boasting a 114W TDP while the HD 6770 comes in at 146W load power, placing them between the HD 5770 and HD 5850 in terms of power consumption.
The rumors started by Chiphell don't say when these two new cards will become available, but PR slides don't usually come that much time before a product launch, so I suspect these Bart GPUs to be available sometime in October. (via
