Today is a sad day, my friends.
AMD has capitulated and decided to settle all disputes with Intel for a bit more than 30 pieces of silver. I have to admit the agreement comes as a shock since AMD was quite on a roll and I expected them to win their legal disputes with ease. However, I guess the financial crisis has shown its ugly fangs and took quite a bite from
Advanced Micro Devices' budget, enough to have them settle for a large sum of dollars in order to continue their development of new technologies.
As far as any comments regarding the settlement of all antitrust and IP disputes is concerned, both companies have released the same bland and very hard to swallow statement telling us that “while the relationship between the two companies has been difficult in the past, this agreement ends the legal disputes and enables the companies to focus all of our efforts on product innovation and development.”
As far as the actual sum is concerned, AMD will be receiving 1.25 billion dollars and will cease and desist any pending litigations such as the case in U.S. District Court in Delaware and the two very famous cases pending in Japan. Intel has agreed to follow a set of business practice provisions and both companies have obtained patent rights from a new five-year cross license agreement and both companies will give up any claims of breach from the previous license agreement.
Well, at least AMD will have the necessary budget to further their research and continue being a thorn in Intel's behind. Seeing how I myself am quite a fan of AMD and ATI, I look forward to seeing what future technologies the 30 pieces of silver they got from Intel will help in developing.
