Personally, I am a huge fan of ATI's
Evergreen family of chips since they still manage to offer top notch
performance even now, almost a year after they were launched, but is
time for ATI to move on since the competition hasn't remained idle, so
rumors stating the next generation Barts chips will be
launched this October sound pretty right to me.
Rumors regarding availability started
to spread after ATI released the Catalyst 10.8 graphics driver that
had the future HD 6000 series video card codenames included in one of
its files.
The file included codenames for 10
different graphics processors and, after some digging,
NordicHardware
came with some details regarding Antilles', Caymen's and Barts'
availability.
According to the same source, this
three will be the main chips used in the future HD 6000 line, Barts
being the first to see the light of day.
Scheduled for an October release, Barts
will come in as a replacement for the current Juniper based cards (HD
5770 and HD 5750), while Caymen will replace Cypress in sometime in
November.
Catalyst 10.8 lists 12 different Cayman
versions, but only two of them seem destined for the
gaming crowd,
the rest featuring the GL prefix that most likely designates the
FireGL line, ATI's professional series of video cards.
Last, but certainly not least, we have
the Antilles graphics cards that are stated to be Hemlock's successor,
so expect them to pack two Cayman GPUs on the same board, in a
similar way to the HD 5970 did with Cypress.
This time, however, two Antilles models
will be released and we can expect them to reach store shelves
sometime this December.
No word on performance or architectural changes since
our last report , but some
increase in speed is expected alongside a lower energy
consumption.
