I like it when companies try to do the same thing except a bit different, it gives me hope! Hope that not everyone is stuck with using the same recipe for producing a device. Take Access for example. Though you probably know them better as the company to have bought the rights to the Palm OS, they have recently decided to venture into the mobile phone market. And they mean business too! So much that they created a new high-end
touchscreen phone as well as a very modified Linux-based operating system.
The device has a 3.5-inch
touchscreen with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels as well as GPS, 3G, 16GB of storage (built-in, no word of a microSD slot) as well as a 5-megapixel camera. Quite interesting, right? Another thing that you'll be quite happy to know is that it uses OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics, which means it will be quite a powerful little device. One of the things that you might be a bit put off by is the fact that the device is limited to the Access NetFront web browser (with push e-mail support).
The ELSE, as they call it, has been developed by Access together with Emblaze and, as I said, it comes with a heavily modified version of Access' Linux Platform, now dubbed ELSE INTUITION. The operating system's home screen looks especially good with menus being easier to use with just one hand. The 'perpetrator' behind this more intuitive interface is the rotary menu selection screen that you admired in the picture.
While there is no pricing or release date being mentioned at the moment, the device is being tested by carriers around the world so we will probably be seeing more details in the following weeks. Needless to say, I for one am looking forward to checking it out.
