Not all portable computing devices are designed in order to function in every condition imaginable, rugged laptops being just what the doctor ordered if you want to use your computer regardless of the weather conditions around you, the Algiz XRW being one of the toughest options available.
Since this is basically a
netbook, Algiz managed to build quite a compact system (for a rugged laptop that is), coming in at just 1.5 kilos, around a 2 GHz Intel Atom processor coupled with 2GB of RAM and a 64 GB solid state disk.
But don't be fooled by the small weight since, the XRW can handle temperatures from -21 °C to 70 °C while also surviving drop tests from 1.2 meters and carrying a IP65 rating against sand, dust and water.
Also, all the available ports and connectors are covered with rubber flaps while the keyboard and mouse-touchpad are illuminated by two led lights and weather sealed, in order for the netbook to be used even in the toughest of conditions.
Other features include Bluetooth, WLAN and GPS as well as a built-in 2-megapixel autofocus camera and an optional high-speed GSM/UMTS/EVDO 3G modem.
“The Algiz XRW represents a key milestone where we have broadened our product range and introduced an innovative and revolutionizing product for the world of
rugged mobile solutions”, said Jerker Hellström, CEO of Handheld Group.
“Our new product fulfills all the market requirements: lightweight and mobile, long battery life, fast processing speed, best in class screen, and all features fully integrated and built rugged from the inside and out.”
Unfortunately, no word on pricing until now, although
Algiz says the XRW will be showcased worldwide in the coming months while consumers will be able to get their hands on one of these sometime in December.
