I have always found humanity's lack of tolerance and understanding for the impaired to be a disgusting trait especially since it is one of the few things that do not take in account race or belief. We have so many amazing technologies nowadays but we never think about using them for the greater good. To offer better means of locomotion to people that cannot walk or perhaps allow
the hearing impaired to better understand the surrounding environments.
Even giving the blind a device that allows them to enjoy reading is enough. No matter how many advancements we make, we need to think about everyone not just those that are more fortunate than others. After all, you never know when you might find yourself in such a situation. Life is funny that way, you know! This is why I salute Amazon's attempt at making
the Kindle a much better device to be used by those with hearing impairment.
“Kindle is for anyone who loves to read - in fact, we’ve heard from thousands of vision-impaired customers and customers with learning disabilities over the past two years who have been helped tremendously by Kindle,” said Ian Freed, Vice President, Amazon Kindle. “With some key modifications, we believe Kindle can be a breakthrough device for the blind, and the team is excited about making these enhancements.”
The Kindle team seems to be working on an audible menu system for the blind and vision impaired so they can navigate around their device without needing the assistance of another person. Besides the audible menu system, there will also be an added font. This new super size font (the seventh) will be twice the height and width of the current largest font. These and a lot more upgrades will be released by the summer of 2010.
