While it's natural for the bigger consumer electronics manufacturer to also produce batteries (in order to accompany their various portable devices), it's rather unusual to see a traditional maker of cooling-oriented computer components enter this segment. Apparently, this is exactly what Swiss company Arctic Cooling has decided to do by rolling out its new line of Alkaline
batteries, called Arctic Power.
According to the manufacturer, this new line is comprised of AA and AAA models, the capacity of Arctic Power being 2,900 mAh and 1,300 mAh for AA and AAA batteries, respectively. The batteries are also touted as being long-lasting and offering a
capacity of up to four times more conventional than zinc-carbon batteries, thus making them a good choice for both low power consumption devices and energy-intensive applications such as CD / MP3 players, PDAs, remote control etc.
Furthermore, thanks to their wide operating temperature range (-30 degrees Celsius to +50 degrees Celsius), the Arctic Power batteries are actually able perform well in all conditions, regardless of where the user might happen to be at the respective moment, either at the North Pole or in the Amazonian jungle.
Both
battery versions have a nominal voltage of 1.5 Volts and use the same type of chemical solution, namely a Zinc-Manganese Dioxide (Zn/MnO2) mixture, with no mercury, cadmium or lead added. Both sport an aluminium foil jacket and, as expected, their weight varies between 23.5g and 11.9g.
The Arctic Power batteries will be available in September 2009, with the MSRP for a pack of eight AA batteries being 7.90 US dollars (5.70 Euro) and for a pack of eight AAA batteries being 8.50 US dollars (5.90 Euro). All things considered, pricing is pretty good, especially as we're talking about a newcomer on this segment, which is yet to build a customer base.
