With the number of cars rapidly increasing, it's much more dangerous not to get hurt in traffic nowadays, whether you are in a car, by foot, or riding a bike. There are of course means of ensuring your safety, such as being very careful and wear retroreflective materials.
However, the last option is considered not to be viable by many, because all of the items falling into this category, if taken out of this context, look hideous most of the times. And safety is not the only thing important to people, so are their looks.
Well, if your usual method of locomotion is a bike, there's a way to make sure drivers will see you in traffic and avoid you, and you don't even have to look geeky or weird while at it, namely the Bright Bike. It is a Retroreflective Vinyl coated bike, meaning that it looks dark black, but turns bright white when a headlight beam shines on it.
It is like coating your bike with a big sticker that turns ultra-bright in headlights. The idea came to Michael Mandiberg, and the project is still in the concept stage, but it looks very promising.
The material used in the process is Scotchlite 680 and can be purchased from Beacon Graphics. This way, everybody can turn their bike retroreflective, sparing themselves from the ordeal of buying a bike that already shines bright whenever a headlight “blinks” on it.
All you have to do in order to have a Bright Bike yourself is own a bike first, then wash your bike and carefully apply the vinyl (this will take some time, if you want to do it right and your bike to look perfect, nevertheless, you won't be spending days around your bike). The last thing to do is to ride your bike and see for yourself how it looks like in headlights.
