Most of us like their gadgets to be as slim and small as possible. We never even think about the actual use that a less slim handheld might have, if used properly and in the right situation. Such as saving your life (and I don't mean hitting the thief over the head with your phone) should you be in a situation where your life needs saving.
Here's something interesting that I recently read about in
The Sun. The story of David Fitzherbert, a man who fell 70 feet and thanks to his Blackberry came to a sudden stop. He was skiing in the Matterhorn and Monterosa peaks in Switzerland when the snow beneath him gave way and he fell into a mountain crevasse.
The length of the crevasse: at least 70 feet. At least 70 because after falling to his doom for 70 feet, his fall (which apparently could have gone for as long as another 700 feet) was halted by his trusty Blackberry phone. It seems the phone's thickness was exactly what was needed for the man to get stuck in-between two walls of ice.
The result: a broken jaw, smashed teeth, a cracked chest bone and nose injuries, not to mention severe hypothermia due to being stuck between walls of ice for two hours. But at least he was alive, and all thanks to his mobile buddy. Which, funny enough, still worked after our man reached the hospital and allowed him to call his wife. I'm pretty sure this phone will be held at high regards by David Fitzherbert in the future!
“Fortunately the extra inches of the Blackberry were enough to block the fall. […] I was stuck so fast they had to get a drill to dig away at the ice around me. I was eventually winched out by the helicopter rescue team,” David said after having recovered.
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed.
