Pantech is one of the key players on the Korean and global mobile phone market; together with Samsung and LG, it forms what is unofficially known as the Korean mobile manufacturing trio. Now that Pantech gets ready to blow our mobile-inclined minds with its blow-controlled Sky Wind phone, we can assume that the people over there decided to be the first to challenge the supremacy of the touch-based user interface.

Apple's innovation has already become a common feature in many above average mobile devices, and to come up with an alternative to it must be pretty risky. Pantech's blow-phone model, codenamed IM-S410K, will work with the Emotion Engine, which means collaborating with those who made it, another Korean company called Fantalog Interactive, specialized in software development. The advantage of their engine is that it needs no hardware modifications.

This kind of technology is not really new, but implementing it in widely used devices such as mobile phones would really test its usability ratio. Is it more practical and efficient than its rival, the multitouch? Or the mere pressing of old-fashioned buttons?

The Fantalog website (according to Digihunter) explains several of the Sky Wind's functions and it would seem that, at least on paper, the innovations sound more than interesting. By blowing air towards the mobile in the right command circumstance, you can get it to adjust the brightness of the screen, switch to another wallpaper, or take a picture using its camera.

The Sky Wind is meant to be smart enough to recognize long blows from short blows so that you have a more diversified type of input at your disposal. It will also sense and differentiate between air coming from a human user and a windy background.
