If you've read some of my previous articles, you probably know by now that I love gadgets as much as the next guy, but would never trade good old paper for anything no matter how great it's supposed to be. Not even if it's Bridgestone Corporation's latest E-paper Device with pen input capability.
I know what you're thinking, “Pen input? What about the lagging? The refresh speed?” Well, Bridgestone has been very scarce regarding details but, as far as I can tell, it has increased the device's refresh speed to 0.8 seconds (previous A4 size e-paper needed 10-15 seconds). How it has done it... well, that remains a mystery for now, but as soon as I get further details, I'll make sure to tell you all about them.
Imagine having one sheet of paper for each of your writing needs. Pretty, cool right? I would have to say yes, even though, from my point of view, no matter what you try or how hard you try it, replacing paper will never be possible. You can replace the idea but never the feel, that great sensation of flipping a page towards your favorite character's next adventure.
Call me old fashioned, but I think technology should focus more on other things than trying to replace stuff that wasn't bad in the first place. I'd rather have makers plant trees or build a better netbook than trying to reinvent paper. But that's me, the always conservative gadget aficionado.
However, I am pretty curious to see how Bridgestone Corp is planning to surpass the technical difficulties that come with the attempt to create an A4 color e-paper device with pen input, especially since there are a lot of variables to be considered for making a successful device.
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
