And ASUS said, “Let there be no week without an Eee PC!” And no week passed without an almost identical Eee PC hitting the news. Since today's the beginning of a new week, it's high time I told you about (please don't tell me you haven't caught up yet) the new 1004DN Eee PC from ASUS (crowd goes wild!), the first DVD-equipped Eee PC in the Eee history.

The 1004DN basically has the same inner configuration as any Eee PC that's hit the market in the recent few months. The 10-inch netbook uses an Intel Atom N280 CPU (1.66 GHZ and not 1.6 GHZ like the N270... wow!), Intel HD video-capable GN40 chipset, not to mention an 120GB HDD (a downgrade from the regular 160GB HDD standard for the Eee). Do I seem a little reluctant regarding this new PC?

Not without reason: apart from the DVD burner, there is absolutely nothing remarkably innovative about this particular netbook. 8-in-1 card reader, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, three USB 2.0 ports and an ExpressCard slot. I'm tired of reciting the same old poetry every time I write about ASUS. Besides, doesn't adding a DVD burner kind of change the purpose of the netbook (net as in surfing the web)? I mean, I use my home PC for burning DVDs, and my netbook for working on the go.

Never found the need for a DVD Burner. The need for extra RAM? Definitely! Increased storage space? Why not? Increased functionality? Oh, yeah! A DVD Burner? Nope! But hey, who am I, the consumer, to say where the company should be heading? I should be happy there are so many Eees being offered, even if it's basically the same, but with a different price tag. Oh, pricing is said to be between 531 and 590 USD.

I can't understand all the negativity toward this model - it's exactly what I've been waiting for. If you don't live in the States "full strength" notebooks begin way above the cost of these AND they will be the 15.4" "economy" models - hardly portable. You pay upwards of 1500USD for a notebook small enough to be truly portable so to suggest you can get something comparable for the same price is a bit of a stretch.

I have a real computer on my desk (as in a desktop not a notebook trying to be one) and what I need is a genuinely portable but still touch-typable SECONDARY machine which I can take away from the distractions of my desktop (i.e., games and the net) so I can actually get some work done. That work requires a wordprocessing application and an mp3 player and that's it - hardly CPU-intensive. The only other thing I need is an optical drive for installation discs, music and reading (and preferably writing) back-up files on DVDs.

I honestly don't think I am alone in being excited about this release, the gadget-guys need to remember that there are a variety of people with a variety of interests and functional needs in the computer consumer universe :)

I couldn't agree more. Except for one thing: the price is for the US so if you think (as i understand it you do not live in the US) it's going to remain in the ~550 USD range once it is shipped outside of the US, i'm sorry to burst your bubble but you are sadly mistaken. As a word of advice though: there are portable devices that are actually affordable outside the US except you need to look a little more.

By the way, I'm Eastern European myself so i know how you feel. Don't blame me blame Asus if you must. :)

I would love a netbook with a DVD. I could watch a movie on the plane, as well as have a functioning computer at the hotel room. All without lugging a heavier laptop.
