The Global Positioning System (GPS) has proved time and time again to be one of mankind's most important developments, helping users find their way through certain locations they had never visited. However, for some people (especially those who have some issues with modern technology), GPS-enabled personal navigation devices are quite often way too complicated, providing loads of features they probably won't be using anyway.
This is the reason why Bushnell, one of the world's best-known manufacturers of various outdoor equipment, has come up with the BackTrack device, designed to provide the most basic of all GPS functions – reaching a certain preset location.
So, for example, let's just say that you're visiting a huge open-air museum or technical park, and you don't have a map of the respective place. Before going in, store your initial location and after you're all done visiting, the device will help you get back to that exact location via the GPS system.
The Bushnell BackTrack makes use of the already very famous and widely used SiRF Star III GPS receiver, which helps it constantly indicate the owner's geographical position. Additionally, the device also sports a self-calibrating digital compass, which helps users get their bearings a lot easier.
The BackTrack is also pretty rugged, meaning that it can be easily taken just about anywhere outside, whether we're talking about a lush rain forest, rocky canyons or something more mundane, as for example the local mall's parking lot. Plus, it requires relatively little power, since it only needs two AA batteries for normal functioning.
The Bushnell BackTrack is available at several retailers for around 110 US dollars, which is certainly a smaller price than that of a full-fledged PND, but, then again, a little too high, given the actual features and functions the device provides.
