We live in modern times and in urban areas we are just a phone call away from the nearest emergency medical service. However, in remote regions like the desert, it is rather difficult for doctors to get on time to patients in need of medical attention, as ambulances don't cope too well with sand. But there seems to be a solution for this situation, which, although not exactly very practical, is as interesting as it is peculiar: a camel-powered ambulance.
Yes, you've got it right and don't try to fool yourselves into believing that camel is in fact the name of a fresh fuel or of a new technology used in vehicles. No, I'm talking about a camel, as in the humped animal that carries people through the desert. A design student named Fresch has come up with a camel-trotting concept known as Baja.
Baja is a lightweight trailer that can seat a doctor. The Baja comes with a lot of practicality and a little bit of technology as well. Apart from a doctor’s seat, the Baja is a fully functional ambulance, where the sick person can be carried and the same compartment can double as an equipment carrier. Whenever the doctor gets a call, a Baja-mounted GPS system tracks the exact location of the patient to enable the doc to reach the one in need.
It's eco-friendly, that's a fact, but camels don't exactly have the speed cheetahs do, so, if you are unlucky enough to get seriously injured in the desert and call for the camel-ambulance, you might actually have the misfortune to never leave the desert, not alive at least.
The Baja concept is a very interesting one, but I assume it would be much easier to attend on patients stranded in the desert by using a Hummer or an all-terrain vehicle, specially designed for rough conditions. At least, this way, the doctor would actually have the chance to get to the patients before it’s too late.
