Morpho Detection Inc., a business of Safran group's Sagem Securite division, has just announced today the release of the Hardened MobileTrace handheld trace detection system. Extending the proven explosives and narcotics detection capabilities of the standard MobileTrace, the Hardened model can now sense chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals that can be turned into weapons.

“The expanded detection capabilities of the ruggedized Hardened MobileTrace make it an especially valuable tool for field operations and investigations involving standard explosives, narcotics, chemical warfare substances and other toxic industrial chemicals,” said Dennis Cooke, president and CEO, Morpho Detection, Inc. “Morpho Detection is committed to developing products that address detection and identification of the constantly evolving threats our customers face in the places they encounter them, including the most challenging field environments.”

Designed to meet the demands of the U.S. Department of Defense MIL-STD-810-G standard for temperature, dust, impact and humidity, the Hardened MobileTrace was engineered for quick, accurate detection in the harshest of environments. The MobileTrace embeds the Morpho Detection patented ITMS, or trace technology in its highly transportable device, also previously proven in detecting ITMS explosives and narcotics highly accurate and sensitive.

The targets of such devices include usage at military bases, border crossings, airports and other facilities and various critical security points across the globe. This looks like a very versatile piece of equipment for spotting hazardous or possible weaponable agents. Most of all, it does not need maintenance like a dog (feeding, etc.) and does not need training like a companion does and, of course, the accuracy is probably a lot higher. I'm only saying this because we all know that dogs are trained to sniff various substances, therefore can be inaccurate, either mistaking or not finding anything, whereas the MobileTrace is directly programmed, thus cannot hold error margins that high, but surely won't play fetch.
