DFI just recently released a new fanless embedded system, namely the ES951, which comes packed with the 3.5" subcompact NP951-B16C SBC and is empowered by an Intel Atom N270 processor on an Intel 945GSE / ICH7M chipset. That's how the system provides a low power consumption, which makes it perfect for embedded computing applications where there's a need for a compact platform that can handle just passive cooling.

Getting to the more detailed system configuration, the NP951-B16C SBC offers users up to 2 gigabytes of system memory thanks to the 200-pin DDR 400/533Mhz SO-DIMM, while for the video output part there's a VGA display port. Audio was not forgotten either and is featured through the 24-bit HD audio with S/PDIF I/O support.

The chassis is made of the highest strength electro-galvanized cold-rolled steel and aluminum, architectured mainly for wall-mounting or desktop application. The very minimal system compactness is ensured mostly by the fact that this does not embed a power supply unit, but is rather shipped with a universal 60-watt power adapter that can work with 100-240 VAC at 50-60Hz line input. With such a small footprint, at 17.2 x 12.5 x 5.2 cm, even the 1.13Kg weight seems irrelevant, making the system even more provident for embedded applications such as digital signage, gaming machines, kiosk, medical electronics, industrial control, security & surveillance, as well as telecommunications.

With an expansion for a slim 2.5" HDD and a CF card, I can't see why this couldn't be used for a minimalistic home entertainment system in a small living room, mini van and the likes. Other connectivity means include two COM ports among which the first is also powered, one Kensington security slot that prevent opportunistic thievery, one Gigabit Ethernet LAN, two USB ports, one DC-IN, one PS/2 port, one MIC and one LINE out port. There is no price statement yet, or I couldn't find it.
