Digital, portable blood glucose meters are not new gadgets, but until the DIDGET, there was none able to connect to a portable gaming console from Nintendo. With its ability to directly connect to a DS or DS Lite, this will help children with diabetes develop testing habits in order to meet their blood glucose target ranges, all the time.

Bayer Diabetes Care thinks that by integrating the DIDGET meter into a child-friendly game-like environment, the young will stay healthy and manage a lifelong disease in a better way.

"As the first meter truly designed with kids in mind, the DIDGET meter can transform a child's blood sugar testing experience from something they have to do into something they want to do," said Dr. Larry Deeb, pediatric endocrinologist and medical director for the Diabetes Center at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in Florida and a paid consultant for Bayer. "Regular blood sugar testing is critical for diabetes management and one of the biggest challenges facing parents of kids with diabetes is motivating their kids to develop good testing habits. Bayer's DIDGET meter adds an element of fun and rewards to the routine of testing and, by doing so, helps ease that parent/child tension that testing often creates," he added.

The producers state the DIDGET is based on their previous CONTOUR meter and is targeted at children between the ages of 4 and 14. The testing games have two modes of play, Basic and Advanced, and after completing the games, children will receive certain rewards.

This way, they will keep testing their blood sugar levels and stay entertained at the same time. These are a full length adventure game and a mini game arcade under the Knock 'Em Downs: World's Fair title.

DIDGET is available for $74.99 via major online pharmacies.
