One of the biggest problems with some Chinese tech companies (well, not all of them, but mostly the mid-range ones) is that they more or less “borrow” technology from some of their competitors (most of which is designed by the biggest names in the CE industry) and use it without any licensing. However, it seems that the guys over at Dolby Laboratories have managed to really make a step in the right direction by licensing their Dolby TrueHD, a lossless compression technology, and Dolby Digital Plus, which delivers up to 7.1 channels of surround sound for Blu-ray discs, to three important digital entertainment companies from China.
Hence, three digital entertainment companies, namely TCL Technoly Electronics (Huizhou) Co., Limited (TCL), MIT Technology Co., Limited (MIT Technology), and Lite-On IT Corporation (Lite-On IT), have agreed to enter a licensing agreement regarding the aforementioned technologies. No financial information related to the licensing terms has been provided.
The reasons for this move are quite obvious, and we can clearly see that from the statement made by Mahesh Sundaram, Vice President, Asia Pacific, Dolby Laboratories, who declared that “China is, strategically, a very important market for Dolby, and we are pleased to be working closely with key customers like TCL, MIT Technology, and Lite-On IT."
"We are committed to partnering with our customers in China to promote their products incorporating Dolby technology and to help them grow the industry by delivering the best high-definition experiences to consumers around the world,” Mr. Sundaram added.
Besides this partnership, Dolby has also stated once again its interest in pushing the HD industry in China and raising ”the awareness of high-definition sound among consumers.” In other words, they're most likely trying to create some interest for genuine products, given the fact that, as we all know only too well, the Chinese market is filled to the brink with all sorts of cheap knock-offs.
