As most of you probably know only too well, the GPS (global positioning system) can be used for many other purposes besides providing navigation instructions for drivers with little sense of orientation. In fact, GPS can also be used for tracking movement (by recording the exact geographical coordinates the GPS receiver has moved through), and that's exactly the case with the device you'll read about as follows, namely the Driving Activity Reporter presented by the guys over at Hammacher Schlemmer.

Hence, this tiny gadget, which attaches to a vehicle either on its interior or exterior (via the built-in magnet for covert purposes) can easily monitor a vehicle's activity in the field, at the same time providing users with a complete report of places, routes, and speeds traveled. In order to do so, the device has been equipped with a 16-channel GPS receiver, as well as a built-in flash memory module, which can store locations of up to 100 hours of movement.

Similar to most other products from the same category, this tracking device also connects to a host computer via USB in order to download the GPS data, which can be later on be translated into animated digital street maps via the software included in the package. Of course, if you prefer to do so, you can always turn to the Google Earth software and re-create your journey.

The Driving Activity Reporter has a fairly tough, shockproof case, and is powered by just two AAA lithium batteries, which offer an estimated functioning life of up to three weeks. This is possible due to the fact that the device will enter sleep mode if it does not detect car movement within two minutes.

We're yet to encounter a decently-priced GPS tracking device, and that's also the case with this particular product, as the Driving Activity Reporter sells for somewhere near 230 US dollars.

The driving activity reporter is an awesome GPS tracking device. I initially was interested in acquiring the product because my teenage son had consistently been receiving tickets for traffic violations. Since I was paying his insurance, which was continuing to rise, I told him i would be putting this device on his car and if he was ever caught going 10mph over the speed limit his car would be taken away.

The talk resulted in much safer driving habits. I looked around online and was able to find the GPS system $30 cheaper than at Hammacher at http://www.tracking-system.com/. The device is really easy to use so don't be afraid if you are not tech savvy.
