Eris, formal designation 136199 Eris, is the largest known dwarf planet in the Solar System and the ninth-largest body known to orbit the Sun directly. It is approximately 2,500 kilometers in diameter and 27% more massive than Pluto.
A dwarf planet is a celestial body that is massive enough to be rounded by its own gravity. It has sufficient mass to overcome its compressive strength and achieve hydrostatic equilibrium. That's where the Pierre Junod spherical watch takes its name from. Even though its called Eris, it is a lot smaller than the planet. I didn't find the patience needed to determine how many times this 32.2mm watch is smaller than the dwarf planet.
Designed by students of l'Ecole d'Arts Applique from Geneva, it is a pure Swiss made product by Pierre Junod Switzerland. It can be worn as a pocket watch, pendant or even as a small desk clock. A white material was used for the hour hand and an orange one for the minute hand, surrounded by mineral glass, sporting Swiss quartz movement in a anthracite anodized aluminum chassis with laser engraved figures.
The two pointers that display the time, that are extensions of hidden hands, are floating around the middle of the globe. The upper hemisphere indicates the minutes while the lower one highlights the hours.
Every watch comes with a natural rubber strap to hang from your neck, a wall or anything you wish. This little cute watch was designed by EAA Geneva, teachers and students, Sandy Barbey, Anouck-Eva Meyer and Emmanuelle Taillard. Including the Renata swiss made 364 battery, the Eris still weights only 36g. When you think about it you realize that there's nothing special to it but merely a distorted spherical clock.
Special or not, it's still Swiss made, and you can find it on the great triple W for the expensive price of $450.
