Even Robots Get Cloned in China

We've come to expect Chinese knock-offs to copy pretty much any type of handheld device out there, be it a mobile phone, PMP, computer or whatever one might think of. However, the Chinese are quite good at copying bigger devices as well (even cars), as we can plainly see when we take a closer look at the Dongguan Deshen's U-290 Robotic Cleaner, which clearly and blatantly copies one of the world's best-known (and loved) mechanical helpers, the Roomba.

Hence, as the Chinese company informs us, what we're dealing with here is a self-recharging cleaning device that automatically cleans one's floor without any human intervention, being able to easily pick-up dirt, dust, pet hair and other debris. Furthermore, the robot can apparently be very easily pre-set in order to start cleaning at a certain time of the day, as well as go back to work when it's finished recharging its battery.

The device also offers a “stair avoidance detector” and it's smart enough to get itself out of a tight spot (not exactly sure how it’s going to do that, but this is beside the point). There's also a wall detector function (the robot can be set to avoid a certain room), as well as a wall following sensor, while the built-in bumper will protect the furniture and walls from getting scratches all over.

The Dongguan Deshen's U-290 Robotic Cleaner is apparently also equipped with a self-adjusting cleaning head that automatically crosses uneven floor transitions as it cleans carpet, hardwood, linoleum, and tile.

While no pricing details regarding the U290 have been provided, it's very likely that it's a lot cheaper than the original model, the Roomba. However, strange enough, the company clearly states that it's not selling the U290 in Korea, this situation being most likely prompted by some legal and copyright-related issues.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .
