FON will be launching this December, 15th, the Peek in Europe, with the PeekFON brand. Despite its smartphone appearance, this is actually an efficient email handheld device that brings users one truly unique function, namely that of having no roaming charges in any European country.
The device is just a complementary to the FON WiFi, but not actually a WiFi, that is designed to
support customers in those exact moments when they cannot find a WiFi spot, in spite of the company's over 800,000 hotspots now available in Europe. Coming in for a price of $145, will allow users to check their email continuously for six months for free, and as I mentioned above, no roaming charges, as well as no contract.
After the first six months of free subscription, users will be charged $19.00 for that service, but with a lot more freedom for the customer, as in no cancellation penalty of any kind in the eventuality of the user wanting to cease the contract, no matter the period, long or short. For the time being, the PeekFON has only the capability of sending and receiving the user’s email, but in the following months, the company will also be
adding support for browsing Tweeter, as well as other capabilities to the PeekFON, and I don't see why not, since the device has a full QWERTY keyboard. Sure, you need to carry two devices, but why wouldn't you as long as both do their job well?
So, if you're only in need to keep up to date with your email messaging, the PeekFON will serve you quite perfect, especially thinking about the high cost of roaming charges when leaving the country. This is relevant mostly for Europeans, but even to the Americans that travel to Europe, as the roaming charges of US operators are disturbing, mind me.
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is
