Have you ever forgotten where you have parked your car in the Mall parking lot? I haven’t, but I have been assured that it's a very common mistake, more common than I would have ever imagined. Well, not anymore, because Globalsat has just rolled out its GD-101 GPS Director digital compass for those times when feeling lost is not just a state of mind.
With a 96 x 95 pixel monochrome display, the device weighs just 45 grams and is just 60 x 60 x 28 mm in size. You may store up to five different destination points either manually or by the press of a button when you are physically at the desired destination. It will show you the distance in kilometers, miles or nautical-miles just in case you've spent too much time as a sailor and forgot how to measure distance in any other way.
It runs for 18 hours straight or more via the power saving mode and it can also maintain signals as low as -161dBm. Seeing how it indicates nautical miles, the device is water proof in case you decide to take it aboard the ship with you. You can even set the Time Zone or display the current date and time, making it perfect for a bunch of other uses.
I'm not sure how such a device would help regular users though, seeing how I've never needed a compass up until now. And probably I never will. But it has possible industrial use and I think that's the target market. Even if I see no practical use for it whatsoever, we might as well get a real life compass for those times when we feel we have lost our way. Who knows where the GD-101 might lead us!
