Ford brings us
one step closer to the future with smart cars that can communicate with the very portable gadgets we like to use on a regular basis, like smartphones, for example. The new SYNC AppLink software that will be integrated on the 2011 Ford Fiesta will allow drivers to access select Android and BlackBerry apps via voice commands and car controls.
"The growth in smartphone mobile apps has been explosive, and Ford has worked hard to respond at the speed of the consumer electronics market," said Doug VanDagens, director of Ford's Connected Services Organization. "SYNC is the only connectivity system available that can extend that functionality into the car. AppLink will allow drivers to control some of the most popular apps through SYNC's voice commands and steering wheel buttons, helping drivers keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road."
The really good news is that until the 2011 Fiesta is available on the market, Ford has made available a website dedicated to their SYNC AppLink software, where any developer will be able to modify their app in order to be AppLink-friendly. This is so that users will not be limited to only the three apps that are currently controllable via this new Ford software. The three applications are
Pandora, OpenBeak and Stitcher.
“We're very pleased by the rapid development time and positive feedback we've seen from our first partners," stated VanDagens. "We want to encourage all developers to visit our site and submit ideas, helping us tap into the global pool of innovation and creativity."
To further expand the usability of their fresh AppLink program,
Ford will be introducing it on all of their models that are SYNC-equipped, starting with the following year. They are also planning on developing the AppLink in order for drivers to be able to access applications only seen on the iPhone or other smartphones.
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is
