Since hardback books require large amounts of wood, thus affecting the world's already unstable environment, their electronic counterparts might actually become a lot more popular in the near future, as people get more environmentally-conscious. We've seen several products of this type arrive on the market over the recent two or three years, probably the most famous being the ones from Amazon or Sony.
However, it seems that yet another contender on this emerging segment might arrive in the near future. According to a report on
Ubergizmo, the Foxit Software company intends to tackle this slice of the consumer electronics market with a product dubbed eSlick, which borrows most of the general features found in its other competitors but, unfortunately, doesn't really come up with anything truly “mind-blowing.”
Thus, the future eSlick will be equipped with a 0.6-inch e-paper display, which provides a 600x800 pixel resolution, but, as expected from a product of this type, no colors. Actually, it's interesting to note that the technology used by the e-book reader from Foxit Software is the exact same one as in the case of Amazon's Kindle, which means that users will probably be able to enjoy a very similar portable reading experience.
Other details include the 128 MB of internal memory, which can be filled with a wide variety of text files, as well as the fact that we're talking about a super slim device, whose maximum thickness is of 4 inches. Connectivity options are also pretty standard for such portable readers, since we're talking about a USB slot and an SD memory card slot. Unfortunately, there's no Wi-Fi module, which is a big minus, compared to the Kindle.
Now, for the price. Given the fact that its features are pretty basic, the eSlick reader from Foxit Software will sell for around 230 US dollars, which is actually a pretty interesting price point, about 100 dollars less than its main competitors.
