We all know servers use-up a lot of power and make lots of noise. Add the fact that most are extremely big and need a lot of space and you wonder why nobody did something to change that. Well, wonder no more! Fujitsu has announced a new compact server that is said to use less energy than a lamp and to be as quiet as a 27dB mouse.

Resembling a compact PC rather than a server, the Fujitsu PRIMERGY TX120 S2 uses Intel's latest power-saving Core 2 Duo processors that are paired with up to 16GB of RAM, as well as the remote ServerView Server Management control.

Both the 25W P8400 or T9400 35W CPU's are available, thus using 25% less power than any other entry-level systems. The TX120 S2 may be fitted with 4 x 320GB SATA or 146B 15.000rpm SAS hard drives. Including eight USB 2.0 ports, VGA and serial connections, as well as Ethernet and a dedicated service LAN Ethernet port, it is hard to believe that 27dB is all the sound it produces.

Clearly designed for “small businesses, branch offices and other organizations looking to save money”, the Fujitsu PRIMERGY TX120 S2 Compact Eco-Friendly Server will be available starting with April 1, 2009 and with the starting price of 545 Euro. A small price for “the most compact server in its class” I would say!

Considering that noise and size have always been an issue with servers, especially where the small companies are concerned, we can safely say that the PRIMERGY will not be lacking on offers. Low power consumption means lower maintenance costs and what small business owner could refuse that, right?
