GE Energy has built the Durathon industrial battery a long time ago, but it is only now that they have developed a model which fits the needs of the uninterruptible
power supply market. Don't imagine Durathon batteries being built into the UPS that's keeping your computer running during power outages, but rather in the systems that can hold a whole hospital up and running during these unfortunate events.
“GE’s Durathon battery has been designed to fit into modern UPS applications where continuous power is a must,” said Ganesh Balasubramanian, Product Manager GE Energy Storage Technologies. “This advanced industrial battery technology has the potential to set new standards for service life, compactness and sustainability.”
Durathon has been updated so that it molds to the needs of the large scale emergency power supplies used in industries where continuous power is obligatory, GE tells us. They promise easy integration with all current
systems used at the moment, without the need for special adapters which usually add extra cost.
It is simply a plug and play battery which doesn't even need maintenance. Also, the companies switching to a Durathon battery for their “safety net” power supplies will probably appreciate its compact size, which has been reduced to one fourth of regular batteries. This is thanks to the high density architecture of the power supply from GE. Of course, one of the direct effects of this battery's smaller figure is the reduced cost for installation.
GE
Energy Technologies used “proprietary chemistry” when building the Durathon battery and this is why they are confident about their solution being able to provide back-up service for up to two decades. All the cells in this battery are recyclable and the manufacturers say that it doesn't leave any toxic waste whatsoever.
The new Durathon battery is lauded mainly because of the opening of a new GE power plant in Schenectady, New York. There are more information about Durathon on GE's official website.
