I'll try to be as gentle as a boy during his first date with the girl next door and ease you into a new article about the
wonderful world of LEDs. You pretty much know everything there is about the technology at this point since I've pretty much written everything there is on the subject but bear with me, my gadget loving amigos, and stay tuned for yet another invention from
GE Lighting Systems.
This time, GE has decided to take on the challenge of making outdoor LED lighting systems. Its new light systems include advanced LED system electronics, thermal management (don't want the light source to overheat and explode when a pedestrian is underneath it now, do we?) and a mechanical and optical design that makes this LED lighting system especially practical when used in parking lots or general lighting applications.
Andrew Lindstrom, senior product manager, GE Lighting Systems, declared that “GE continues to bring to market innovative white LED system technology. […] Our new GE Evolve LED Area Light is a real-world,
GE-quality LED solution for retail and municipal users. It delivers greater energy efficiency and lower lifetime costs, and redefines the idea of energy efficient outdoor lighting.”
They are said to save up to 30 percent more energy than traditional metal halide lighting and their service life is rated at 50,000 hours. That's 10 years worth of use. They consume from 97 to as much as 214 watts depending on their distribution pattern, which is a lot less when compared to the traditional 400-watt HID systems that the GE Evolve LED Area Light is meant to replace.
This new lighting underwent a lot of wear and tear tests in order to make sure it offers the highest reliability and performance. All in all, this lighting system looks to be a viable and pretty interesting solution to normal outdoor lighting. Sure wouldn't mind seeing them around town in the near future, I'll tell you that!
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is
