There's really something special about all of those high-end, “haute horlogerie” timepieces that arrive on the market from time to time, and that's also pretty much the case with the latest such product from GRIEB & BENZINGER, namely the The Blue Wave 18-karat gold monopusher skeletonized chronograph, which we can really consider to be more of a work of art than an actual watch.
Built around a fully reconditioned Minerva column wheel chronograph movement estimated to be from about 1925, the Blue Wave features the company’s typical blue platinum coating of the base plate.
If you're not exactly an expert in watch history, you should know that the makers of the original movement system, Minerva, was, in its heyday, one of the finest and best chronograph makers in the world.
Chronographs had already been in existence since around 1800, however Minerva was one of the first chronograph makers to incorporate a minute counter.
Anyway, back to the Blue Wave, it's important to mention that the base plate was first hand-skeletonized to its barest minimum in characteristic wave style and the case back hand-guilloché.
All 34 steel screws were polished by hand and classically tempered a cornflower blue over an open flame.
The Blue Wave is a unique item (since Minerva movements have been out of production for quite a long time now), and for this reason, it should come as no surprise that GRIEB & BENZINGER's asking around Euro 87,500 (117 757 US dollars) for this very exquisite timepiece.
