As you might remember, not earlier than yesterday, Garmin introduced the
Forerunner 310XT waterproof fitness watch, a device targeted especially at those users who are quite keen on keeping some pretty precise tabs on their workout. However, it would seem that the GPS manufacturer wasn't quite satisfied with rolling out just one product, so it also launched the 405CX, whose main area of expertise is the heart rate-based calorie computation.
Hence, according to the company, the Forerunner 405CX monitors the micro changes in a user’s heart rate and uses that detailed information to better calculate the number of calories burned during aerobic activity. In addition to monitoring heart rate and counting calories with precision, Forerunner 405CX tracks speed, distance and location.
The device also sports a very innovative touch bezel on the face of the watch, making navigating the options easier than ever. Simply by tapping, holding or running a finger along the bezel, runners can begin a new workout, access their training history or challenge a Virtual Partner. The Forerunner 405CX makes training with a Virtual Partner easy and efficient, since runners can adjust the Virtual Partner’s pace without stopping in the middle of a workout.
The device also sports two form-fitting bands to accommodate large and small wrists alike, and is extremely easy to carry around, since it weighs just around 60 grams. It is also water-resistant (IPX7) and can be used outdoors or indoors, while the high-sensitivity GPS receiver with HotFix quickly acquires and sustains satellite reception.
Furthermore, similar to the other models from the Forerunner family, the 405CX incorporates ANT+ personal area network technology, which enables fast and easy communications with a variety of products, allowing users to download workout data to a computer, as well as attach various accessories to the Forerunner.
The device from Garmin sells for somewhere in the vicinity of 370 US dollars, which is indeed a pretty steep price point, but given the fact that this thing can actually replace a personal trainer, it's worth it.
