Adding a GPS navigation system to your motorcycle is kind of “asking for it,” don't you think? I mean, the motorcycle is not exactly a four-wheel car. Sure, there's an audio feed being sent by most GPS systems allowing for the driver to hear the instruction instead of having to look on the display all the time but then again that can be considered a distraction as well. However, there are times when you really need GPS systems even if you're riding your bike. GPS systems such as the one that Garmin is preparing.
The manufacturer has announced that, together with BMW Motorrad, it has developed the new BMW Motorrad Navigator IV, a navigation system that combines the best of Garmin's and BMW's technologies in order to bring safe and reliable GPS navigation to motorcyclists everywhere.
Roger Jollis, Garmin’s director of OEM and mobile marketing, declared that “Garmin and BMW are known within their respective industries for providing high-quality, high-end products with superior customer satisfaction and support. […] By equipping BMW motorcycles with the BMW Motorrad Navigator IV, riders can let the GPS device deliver spoken turn-by-turn instructions while they focus on the road and enjoy a worry-free ride.”
The navigator has a bright 4.3-inch touchscreen display, accurate and detailed visual and audio information and street maps that Garmin claims to feature “millions of points of interest.” The Navigator IV has a BMW exclusive four-button mount that is waterproof, fuel spray resistant, vibration-tested and can withstand UV rays with ease.
Using Google or MapQuest, the driver can plot routes and send them directly to the device, share their routes with other motorcyclists by logging onto a free online community and much more. It will be made available in the third quarter of this year.
