When I last renovated my apartment, one of my biggest concerns was to get rid of all the wires hanging on the walls, starting with the home network cables and ending with the Cablet TV extensions “sprouting out” from the main receiver. In the end, I managed to do a pretty good job at hiding all those wires within the walls, but I'll have to admit that things would have probably been a whole lot easier had I used the Homeplug Kit from Sitecom.

During a recent local even held by the company, I had the chance to take a very close look at this kit, and found it to be extremely beneficial, since it allows users to create home networks in a very fast and easy manner, without requiring any additional Ethernet cables. The secret here is the use of the power lines already inserted in the walls for data transmission, setting up the network being as easy as plugging in the transmitter and receiver within the home plugs.

According to Sitecom, their solution supports up to 200 Mbps PLC data transmission rate (well, at least the top version, because they also had an 85 Mbps model on display). The devices support the powerline networking standards (IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3U, Homeplug 1.0.1) and work on the 4.3 – 20.9 MHz frequency band, while supporting QAM 8/16/64/256/1024, DBPSK, DQPSK, ROBO OFDM modulation.

Since the security of such a solution is a very serious topic, Sitecom also points out that their Homeplug Kit 200 Mbps offers 128-bit AES Link Encryption with key management for secure powerline communications, meaning the user's data will be safe at all times.

The powerline networking adapters only sport one 10/100 Ethernet RJ45 port (beside, the mains adapter, of course), but, as you can see from the photos, they're pretty bulky, which means they'll take quite a lot of space around the wall mains adapter areas. However, I guess that this is rather a small trade-off, given just how useful these things could prove to be in certain situations.
