We've pointed out several times up until now that Google has not been exactly “generous” in terms of accessories for its Nexus One smartphone, probably because the number of devices sold wasn't significant enough to justify the development of such products. However, it seems that the company's slowly, but surely, changing its mind, as they've officially released the Nexus One
Car Dock, an accessory that will come in handy especially for those people who want to take advantage of the Google Maps-based navigation system enabled by the Android smartphone.
As we pretty much expected, in addition to holding one's Nexus One, the car dock also charges the phone’s battery, lets them use the
smartphone handsfree, and provides easier access to voice and navigation apps.
The dock’s built-in speakers and volume controls enhance the in-car music and media experience. And the Car Home app, which loads automatically, makes it easy to access Maps and Navigation, Voice Search, Contacts, and
Music.
The accessory should be easily mounted on the windshield or dashboard, and it ships with an adhesive disc that lets users attach it to a textured surface as well. The dock comes with a charger to fit into the car’s 12V utility socket, and the holder can rotate for flexible orientation.
Naturally, pricing for this accessory is not exactly small, users who want to benefit from the advantages provided by this product having to cough up around 55 US dollars in order to do so. And, naturally, the dock also comes with a safety warning, the good people over at Google informing us that “When mounting the dock, be sure to place the dock securely and in such a way that it does not obstruct the driver’s view of the road or interfere with the driver’s or passengers’ safety (e.g. by interfering with vehicle operating controls or locating it where the airbags could deploy).”
