As many of you know, the next generation HDMI connector was recently announced by HDMI Licensing and its name is Micro Connector, or HDMI Type D (I'd rather go with “micro,” since it sounds a lot better). The industry's first miniaturized (I mean, really miniaturized) connector solution to actually deliver high definition video and images from mobile devices such as handhelds to flat panel screens, the connector follows HDMI Specification 1.4.
Molex (the company behind Type D Micro Connector) estimates that the HDMI Type D PCB receptacle connectors, cable plug kits and complete cable assemblies will be made available to the public in the summer of 2009 (namely, this year). Let us see what Steve Venuti, president of HDMI Licensing, LLC., had to say, shall we?
“The new HDMI Type D Micro Connector is designed to meet the needs of portable devices by providing these products with a fully functioning, smaller 19-pin connector. We are pleased to see companies like Molex leading the way by providing the market with these new, innovative HDMI solutions.”
The fresh Micro Connector will definitely pave the way towards better interaction between small form devices such as mobile phones and your home computer or just your monitor. Just imagine what the combination between a USB 3.0-enabled smartphone with an HDMI Type D connector and an OLED flexible (able to be rolled) screen would look like. Pure magic, wouldn't you say?
I’ll leave you with a statement made by Scott Sommers, group manager, new product development, Molex Incorporated, “In addition to our recent Emmy Award win for the HDMI Type A connector, our next generation Type D connector is further evidence of Molex’s leadership in innovative I/O technology development. […] Molex continues to drive market innovation with the world’s smallest I/O connector, providing consumers with higher definition video and images.”
